Due to larger build areas in additive
manufacturing and the use of multi-laser
systems with full-field overlap, the scanner
range is utilized to the maximum. This leads to the challenge of achieving uniform process
results regardless of part position and the
deflection angle of the laser beam.

Additive manufacturing is currently undergoing a transformation from prototype to series production. Following the demand for higher productivity, industrial 3D printers with larger build volumes and multiple lasers are being developed.
Larger build platforms combined with a full coverage by each laser-scanner unit may result in flatter angles of incidence of the laser beams. At the same time, part quality is essential, and a large variation in the part properties is not tolerated in series
production. In this whitepaper, the dependency of process quality on the laser’s center position is investigated for metal Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF).

This whitepaper gives answers to:

  •  What are the challenges for multi-laser AM systems?
  • What is the impact of laser deflection?
  • How can new exposure strategies like LCDS solve the challenges?
